Separating Student Loans After Divorce

Separating Student Loans Soon after Divorce
I’m 1 year into divorce proceedings, next court date is in two weeks. I’m hoping it will be a final hearing. My soon to be ex has created the method challenging, fighting me for each and every cent. He makes a lot more than I do and I only want half of our assets and I am done–I was even willing to walk away from some assets like an ATV, etc. Even so I had a 16,000 student loan ahead of we had been married, paid about 150 a month on it for the 12 years of marriage (yes out of a joint account–but that was exactly where all my paychecks went). After we separated our finances, the student loan became mine once again–some thing I expected and had no difficulty with. But now he appears to believe that he is owed something for the money I spent on that loan in the course of the marriage. Is it probable that somehow that would be a debit in my column of the asssets? We’re in WV. Thank you.

I doubt it specially given that he can’t prove he was paying them simply because you were working too. I hope you have a excellent lawyer. Good Luck.

No, he won’t get anything back for it. It was dual costs during the marriage, for which you had a job and paid your part. Thank God you are done with this petty douchebag.

He won’t be able to reclaim that, he’s just trying to be as difficult as possible. It’s a way of breaking you down. I recently went through a long, drawn out nasty divorce where my ex attempted to claim all sorts of things. This is sheer manipulation on his part. Stay strong and solid and remember that old saying “Never let them see you sweat”. Good luck to you.
